Imagine this. You just turned 16, quit high school, moved to New York City, and signed a 2-album contract worth over $1.2 million. Your debut album becomes the greatest-selling album by a Canadian artist in the 21st century. You are touring the world. Becoming a global icon who millions of girls look up to. You're a fresh new face in a repeating genre. You paved the way for female-led pop punk. You're stressed, but you knew this would be an effect of fame and continued to persevere and make more music for your fans. Still to this day, you are one of the most successful Canadian artists of all time. You've continued your career for over 20 years. This is Avril Lavigne's life.
In 2014, Avril was diagnosed with Lyme Disease, having a near-death experience and leaving her bedridden for two years. Not only did this affect her physical health, but she was also emotionally drained and exhausted. To add to the horrible situation, rumors started circulating that she had killed herself in 2003 and was replaced with a body double named Melissa Vandella. Slowly becoming a genuine conspiracy theory, it gained a global following, but mostly in Brazil. The original blog that gained so much traction was called "c which translates from Portuguese to "Avril is Dead." Weird... right? The blog was posted around 2011, but it's believed the theory was around as far back as 2005. But in 2015, a Buzzfeed (a popular blog-like pop culture website) reporter randomly decided to tweet Avril Està Morta, and it blew up in America. Later, this reporter cleared up that he didn't believe the theory, and that the blog states the author doesn't believe it. But the author of the original blog post never mentioned they didn't believe it until years later, after she added it.
There are different speculations about how and why she died, but the most prevalent one is that she overdosed. Her record company was scared of losing her and the money they had been earning from her, so they trained her close friend, Melissa Vandella, to act just like her and replace her. Apparently, it was never Avril at social events, even when Avril was alive. Melissa had always taken over public appearances.
In addition to "Avril Està Morta," in 2017, a high schooler had tweeted a whole Twitter thread (which has now been deleted) with evidence she was replaced.
Some of the evidence of the rumor is lyrics, facial differences, and one as obscure as Avril prefers to wear pants and shorts, while Melissa prefers to wear dresses or skirts.
Here is some "evidence..."
(which is very popular for celebrities to get) or even just makeup.
Some lyrical evidence from "Nobody's Home" now:
I couldn't tell you
'Cause she felt that way, she felt it every day
And I couldn't help her
I just watched her make the same mistakes again
What's wrong, what's wrong now?
Too many, too many problems
Don't know where she belongs, where she belongs
She wants to go home, but nobody's home
That's where she lies, broken inside
With no place to go, no place to go
To dry her eyes, broken inside
Her feelings she hides
Her dreams she can't find
She's losing her mind
She's fallen behind
She can't find her place
She's losing her faith
She's fallen from grace
She's all over the place
The theorists believe this is subliminal messaging about how she killed herself, and these lyrics are New Avril talking about Old Avril.
More lyrics now:
Let's talk this over
It's not like we're dead
Was it something I did?
Was it something you said?
Don't leave me hanging
In a city so dead
Held up so high
On such a breakable thread
These lyrics, from "My Happy Ending," suggest that she hanged herself as a form of suicide.
Another popular piece of evidence is Avril's height change over 9 years. In 2002, her height was declared as 1.58m, and her height now is 1.55m. New Avril loves wearing heels and uses them as a way to cover up the height difference.
This Brazilian website still has her height as being 1.58m.
Fans wonder how someone's height could change like that, but the probable explanation is that her height was not recorded correctly.
The last main evidence is that her voice (singing and talking) has changed significantly. New Avril has a hard time hitting lower notes now and primarily sings in the soprano range. But old Avril was a mezzo soprano.
Here's a comparison video with the proof:
This one is specifically with the song "Losing Grip" which was off her first album.
Another video:
Of course, each piece of evidence branches out into smaller, more detailed explanations.
But, Avril always denies it, who knows what is true...
